The “Cause of the Classic”: The Food Drive
The Federation of Virginia Food Banks is the official non-profit partner of the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic. The Governor’s Office is pleased to support the Federation of Virginia Food Banks as the “Cause of the Classic.” During the holidays, Virginians regularly take time to lend some help to those who are less fortunate and in need. As part of that Virginia tradition, Governor McDonnell decided to partner with the Federation of Virginia Food Banks to support a state and regional food drive to benefit those struggling to find a reliable source of nutrition. All students, faculty, staff and fans are encouraged to participate by supporting your local food bank during the holiday season.

The food drive surrounding the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic will begin on November 15th and end on December 15th.

During this time Virginians are encouraged to consider making a food or financial donation to their local food bank. When they do, they will then designate one of the four participating universities to get the credit for that donation. At the end of the food drive, Virginia’s food banks will tally up the food and funds received, and the winners for each matchup will be announced between the two games on December 22nd. In other words, contributions attributed to the University of Richmond will be measured against contributions attributed to George Mason University, and contributions attributed to Old Dominion University will be measured against contributions attributed to The University of Virginia. Virginians can donate on campus or online to support their institutions bid to raise the most food in support of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks.
