Sodexo Stop Hunger Food Drive

2012-12-19 001 2012-12-19 002Sammie Johnson, Alonzo Townsend and Michele Ebron from Sodexo Government Services in Quantico, stopped by yesterday along with Georgia Johnson (not pictured) to donate the results of the Sodexo Stop Hunger Food Drive to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank.  The 437 pounds of food brought to the food bank today is the result of many buildings on base having a friendly competition to encourage giving during the holiday season.  This encouragement and donations will result in over 360 meals being provided back to the hungry of our community.  Thank you Sodexo for providing food for those people you see everyday and providing food to folks you may never meet.  What a wonderful holiday gift.

The Generosity of Others

Steven Groth knows the value of giving. It was instilled in him early by his dad John Groth. John was a quiet, unassuming man who loved life and lived each and every day to its fullest. Having grown up during the Great Depression and later serving as a POW in a German prison camp during WWII, John experienced firsthand the fear of uncertainty and the pain of going without. These profound experiences molded John. John truly believed that the greatest good one could do was to be of service to his fellow-man and he passed that belief on to his son Steven.

Steven Groth continues the caring compassionate tradition of service instilled by his father’s example. Steven has been a familiar face at the FAFB for years, and came by in November to see how he could help and to donate funds to ensure a warm and happy Thanksgiving for those in need. In December, Steven Groth was back at the FAFB with a check for $2,500.00 to provide food for those who are hungry this holiday season. Quietly, Steven is working each day to make life less fearful and uncertain for those experiencing food insecurity because of the lessons he learned from his father. Steven understands that being of service to others is what we are here for and that being of service to others is a great way to connect and stay connected to those we love.

In this time of giving, the teachings of the father have had a tremendous impact on the son who, in turn, donates to encourage and provide nourishment for the community.

Odyssey Montessori 2012 Food Drive

Odyssey Montessori will be collecting non-perishable food items starting next week through winter break! Just look for the donation box in the lobby.

Please have your children encourage family members to bring non perishable food items on Grandparents Day to help kick off their annual Food Drive!

Once the food drive boxes have been filled, Elementary students will be taking a special field trip to the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank to deliver the collected items themselves. They will have the opportunity to take a student tour of the Food Bank’s facility to see firsthand how the FAFB receives and distributes millions of pounds of food to those in need.
