February 6, 2013: The Fredericksburg Area Food Bank receives $50,000 from the Wal-Mart Foundation State Giving Program to purchase food and produce. For FY13, the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank has made a commitment to our partner agencies to keep top 10 “most needed” items and produce available to stock their shelves.

Fredericksburg, VA – February 6, 2013:  Over 70 partner agency pantries depend on the food provided by the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank (FAFB) to stock their shelves.  The Wal-Mart Foundation State Giving Program has provided $50,000 to allow the FAFB to purchase food items that are not received through donations.  “We want to make sure we have the top 10 “most needed” food items available when our partner agencies need to stock their pantries.”  President & CEO, Oya Oliver said “donations are down after the holidays.  People have been very generous but to keep our commitment to our agencies we need to find a way to purchase food we do not get through food drives and donations.  This grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation provides the funding to help us keep food coming in even when donations are down.”

Last year, nearly 21,000 people across the Fredericksburg region received food provided through the food bank’s network of partner agencies and organizations.  The need has increased this year.  Oya Oliver, CEO of the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank says, “Hunger has reached into middle class households.  Hundreds of families are now seeking food assistance that never needed to before due to unemployment or underemployment.  The funding from the Wal-Mart Foundation State Giving Program will allow the FAFB to purchase food and produce to ensure we always have our top 10 “most needed” items and produce available for our partner agencies.  We want to make sure our partner agency pantries can come to the food ban k and know we will have food to help them feed the hungry of our community.”

“The holidays are now over, states Mrs. Oliver, but many are hungry every day.  Remember those who are suffering this year.”  Non-perishable food items are always needed.  A wish list is available on the web site.  For more information, go online to http://www.fredfood.org or call the food bank at 540-371-7666.
