BJ’s Charitable Foundation Celebrates 30th Anniversary with $21,000 Unlocking Fresh Potential Grant to Help End Hunger

image004FREDERICKSBURG, VA – January 28, 2015 – In an effort to assist the partner agencies of the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank (FAFB) to safely distribute more food to the community, BJ’s Charitable Foundation thorough Feeding America has awarded the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank a grant for $21,000 to purchase food distribution equipment.  According to Mishelle Krogstad, Agency & Programs Director for the FAFB, “This grant award will allow all 78 of our partner agencies to receive transport and storage equipment to safely transport the food they receive from the food bank back to their pantries to increase food distribution to the hungry.”

BJ’s takes food safety and hunger seriously.  They know that while food banks have immense space and storage to provide product for the food pantries and shelters they support, these smaller partner organizations and charities often have limited equipment abilities.  Limited equipment hinders their ability to serve the community.  By providing anti-hunger partners like food pantries, shelters and meal programs with the necessary equipment, they can transport and store a larger amount of perishable items and thus distribute more food to local families struggling with food insecurity.

“This is very exciting” according to Dayna Klein, Major Gifts & Grant Manager for the FAFB, “We received the funding notification in September and sent the word out to our partner agency pantries to let us know what they need.”  All of the FAFB partner agency pantries were invited to write a short essay on what they need and how the items will help with safe and efficient food distribution to the community.  Ms. Klein went on to say “All of our partner agency pantries will receive coolers and special cooling blankets to allow for more fresh produce, meat, and dairy to be picked up from the FAFB and distributed back to the hungry but the really exciting part is that several of our partner agencies are receiving some very nice items through this grant that will help them provide for hundreds of families each week.”

According to Oya Oliver, FAFB CEO, “This grant is important because it supports one of the primary pillars in the strategic plan of the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, i.e.,  to increase our partner agency’s ability to build capacity and provide safe, fresh food to those seeking assistance throughout the Fredericksburg region. We are so thankful to BJ’s for this grant and for their commitment to ending hunger.”

Items have been arriving at the food bank for weeks.  The awards ceremony will take place at the Fredericksburg Area Food Bank 3631 Lee Hill Drive Fredericksburg, on Thursday, January 29, at 5:30 pm.  Special guests include representatives from our local BJ’s Wholesale and FAFB President and CEO Oya Oliver to help present the awards to the agencies. The public is invited to attend.
