Giant Food’s Our Family Foundation Awards Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank $112,500 Grant to Grow Child Feeding Programs

FREDERICKSBURG, VA  (February 17, 2017) – Giant Food’s Our Family Foundation recently awarded the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank (FRFB) with a $112,500 grant to grow child feeding programs designed at ending child hunger in our community.  With an eye to sustainability, the FRFB will use this grant funding to expand the Kids on the Go Summer Feeding (KOG), the Club Kids II Pilot Afterschool Fresh Snack Program and the Food-4-Families (F4F) School Pantry Programs.

Giant’s grant funding will provide much needed food resources to expand the Kids on the Go Summer Feeding Program.  For two years the FRFB has been providing freshly prepared meals to the children of Caroline County through congregate feeding sites.  According to FRFB Children’s Program Coordinator, LaToya Brown “Though we count our efforts as successful, we recognize that a large portion of the county’s neediest children do not have the means to access our summer meals due to transportation barriers. Using these funds to add a mobile feeding component to our congregate meal program will enable us to provide meals to the most food insecure children through a targeted delivery route incorporating stops at sites approved as area-eligible open feeding sites through the USDA Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).”

This grant funding from Giant will allow the FRFB to expand the summer feeding program and provide four mobile meal sites and two congregate meals sites in Caroline County for three days each week Tues-Thurs, for 10 weeks.  The remaining counties will be served through five congregate meal service sites at area schools, low income housing communities and the local library.

The Club Kids II Pilot Program will target low-income areas in Planning District 16 to include sites in the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County.  We chose to target sites located in these service areas due to their high child food insecurity rates and limited afterschool snack/meal availability. We began the Club Kids II Pilot with an early roll-out of sites and will include additional sites as the year progresses. Partnering with agencies that provide afterschool care will enable the Club Kids II Pilot Program to reach needy children with an additional fresh food source to fill in the hunger gap between being released from class and arriving at home.

Giant’s previous grant funding helped launch our Food-4-Families School Pantry Program and we are continuing to grow the program this year.  The Food-4-Families School Pantry Program is a collaborative effort between the FRFB, participating schools and community sponsors and is designed to provide on-site school pantries so families experiencing food insecurity or crisis have immediate access to a 2-3 day supply of healthy meal items from a trusted community partner.  This will allow the family time to access a local pantry and obtain Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) information to sustain should long-term assistance be required.

In working together to effectively implement this grant funding, garnering support from the community, volunteers, and advocates, and collaborating with area schools we can end childhood hunger in our community.
